biotip is a monofilament tippet which is 100% biodegradable low-visability fishing line designed to deliver an excellent fly fishing experience and be good for the environment.
biotip tippet is as strong as regular tippet. For example, bioptip 5XB is equal in tensile strength to a regular 5X.
The "b" stands for "biodegradable". We use our special size system so you can be assured of strength. biotip tippet is slightly bigger than regular tippet, so if you compare a 5X tippet to our 5XB tippet, it will be a little bigger. However, the strength will be identical. To make it easy for you to find the strength you need, we kept the numbers the same.
biotip tippet is low visibility, comparable to fluorocarbon. The fish won't see you coming!
biotip tippet is made from a special 100% biodegradable polymer specifically designed to conserve the environment. biotip tippet is compostable and biodegradable in water and soil within approximately 5-7 years. biotip does not require industrial composting and will biodegrade and compost in the natural environment.
The short answer? Nope. For starters, biotip doesn't start to biodegrade while it is still in the package. Next, biotip holds up great for 18-24 months on your reel. Finally, if your line is lost, biotip is engineered to degrade within approximately 5-7 years. For example, it will slowly degrade in the water or soil over those years.

if your line is lost, biotip tippet is engineered to degrade within approximately 5-7 years - unlike monofilament or flurocarbon fishing line, which takes 600+ years to degrade! biotip is significantly better for the environment.
Short answer, nope. biotip doesn't start to biodegrade while it is still in the package.
For best results, keep biotip sealed in the package until you are ready to use it.
Yes, we are proud to say that our biotip technology is also being used for ghost nets in Norway and Korea, helping to make a positive impact on the environment.
Yes, it sure is! biotip's packaging is 100% biodegradable or compostable. Even the spool is 100% biodegradable.
biotip was created by the Western Filament family. Western Filament has a long history of innovation and and we are enthusiastic about nature, the environment, and of course fly fishing! Based in Grand Junction, Colorado, we are passionate about spending time in the stunning nature there, as well as throughout the USA and around the world.
Regular fishing line lasts forever. Monofilament or flurocarbon fishing line takes 600+ years to degrade. Fishing line stays in the water and gets tangled in reeds along shorelines, causing hazards for wildlife and doing untold damage to the environment.
Not a darn thing. biotip delivers fantastic strength, zero water absorption, low visibility (comparable to flurocarbon), shock absorption, UV and abrasion resistance, and excellent knot strength. Fly fish with biotip and you won't know the difference - but the planet will!
Good question! biotip is made from a proprietary polymer designed to biodegrade and/or compost safely in the environment. In other words, our "secret recipe" for fishing line is made of good stuff! Fly fish with biotip and you won't know the difference - but the planet will!
